New Artists, Old Friends
First Friday Artwalk, April 3rd, from 5:00 to 8:00pm
Artetude is fast approaching it’s third anniversary, and one of our most dynamic founding artists, painter, Karen Titus Smith, is joined with two of the newest members of the Artetude family to bring a very special exhibition to Asheville, through their newest works in etching, painting, and paper collage.
Help us welcome two new artists to Artetude Gallery: Suzy Schultz and Grant Penny!
Suzy Schultz has little formal art training, but was exposed to art at an early age through her mother, who is a painter. She has painted full time since 1995, yet is a true master of “solar plate etching”, an etching technique that is friendlier to the environment and relies on the sun to make the imprints. In Suzy’s delicate realistic depictions of bird’s nests, she splotches the tiny eggs with white pastel, nearly convincing the viewer that they could scoop the nest out of the frame and into their cupped hands. For contrast, her strong understanding of the forms of the human body and emotion communicate the struggles and subtleties of life experience. Suzy lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia. Grant Penny craves simplicity. A graphic designer by trade, Penny satisfied a need for hands-on creativity beyond computers and as a result, his paper craft came to life. Penny’s representations of easily recognizable forms are testaments to his love of the playful simplicity found in everyday life. Grant is a North Carolina native who has lived in Asheville since 2003.
